Burkina Faso: SOVIB, a new showcase for local processing

The Council of Ministers, meeting on Thursday under the chairmanship of Captain Ibrahim Traoré, approved the creation of the Burkina Faso Wine Company (SOVIB). The initiative reflects the government’s desire to diversify the national industrial base and increase the value added from locally produced raw materials.

SOVIB will take the form of a mixed-economy company with majority public participation. Its initial capital is set at one billion CFA francs, distributed as follows: the State 45%, BRAFASO 10%, and the Burkinabe private sector 45%.

The company’s main objective is to process grapes grown in Burkina Faso in order to create an industrial sector around this agricultural product. This approach aims to reduce the country’s dependence on imported products and strengthen the value added generated within the country.

According to the authorities, the establishment of SOVIB should create hundreds of jobs in agricultural production as well as in processing, logistics, and marketing. The project could thus directly benefit local producers and young people seeking professional opportunities.

This decision reflects the vision of the Progressive Popular Revolution, which prioritizes initiatives capable of strengthening the country’s economic autonomy. By focusing on local processing, Burkina Faso intends to develop new value chains and consolidate its industrial fabric.
