Burkina Faso: 39 years on, Sankara’s legacy continues to inspire the people

Thirty-nine years have passed since the assassination of Captain Thomas Sankara and his twelve companions on October 15, 1987. But time has clearly not erased the memory of the father of the Burkinabe Revolution. Quite the opposite: his legacy remains more alive than ever, inspiring each day a people in search of dignity and sovereignty.

Thomas Sankara is not merely a historical figure. He has become a moral compass for contemporary Burkina Faso.

His patriotic commitment, his integrity, his rejection of privileges, and his determination to place the people at the center of public action continue to guide the nation’s steps.

In a context marked by information warfare and attempts at destabilization, his message of resistance and sovereignty resonates with striking relevance.

What stands out in Sankara’s legacy is the consistency between his words and his deeds. He refused the presidential salary, drove a modest car, and regularly went among the people.

This model of sobriety and closeness today inspires the governance of Captain Ibrahim Traoré, who openly places himself in this lineage.

The Patriotic Support Fund, supplied by citizens’ voluntary contributions, embodies this spirit of collective mobilization around the defense of the homeland.

Sankara’s legacy is not just a memory. It is a call to action. “Fatherland or death, we shall overcome,” he said.

This phrase, far from being a slogan, sums up a requirement: that of individual and collective responsibility. Today, Burkinabe are called to show the same patriotic commitment: consume local products, produce Burkinabè goods, support the defense and security forces, and defend national unity in the face of divisions.

Thirty-nine years after his death, Sankara is not forgotten. He has even become a source of inspiration for all African youth, who see in him the symbol of an Africa standing tall, sovereign, and dignified.

His legacy reminds us that true independence cannot be decreed: it is built through work, rigor, and sacrifice.

As Burkina Faso resolutely commits itself to the path of the Popular Progressive Revolution, the figure of Thomas Sankara remains that beacon lighting the way.

His patriotic commitment does not belong to the past: it is a promise for the future. And it is this flame that continues to guide a people determined never to renounce its dignity.
